HOWARD — The Mount Vernon volleyball team was cruising right along, chugging down the tracks Tuesday, hoping to honor its five seniors with an exciting win over visiting Big Walnut.
But, the train ran off the tracks after two sets and Big Walnut rallied to take a 19-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-7 victory in Ohio Capital Conference action at the Hive.
“It was a tough game to lose. I feel like we played our hearts out,” said senior Alex Miglin.
Miglin, as well as Sarah Tracey, Kate Reynolds, Abree Green and Taylor Boucher and their parents, were honored prior to the game on Senior Night.
It was the last home match for the quartet and they came out with something to prove in the first game with Big Walnut.
After the Eagles scored the opening point of the night, Mount Vernon (10-8, 10-3) exploded for the next nine behind the serving of Miglin. Big Walnut (13-6, 10-2) tried to rally late, but MV was able to hold on for the victory.
The Eagles picked up the pace and the momentum in the second game, but Mount Vernon was able to pull out the victory and looked to be in control.
