MOUNT VERNON — Last year, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets came out victorious in one of the most exciting high school football games in recent memory, a 36-33 win over Ohio Capital Conference powerhouse Big Walnut at Yellow Jacket Stadium.

But that was last year.

The Big Walnut Golden Eagles are back. And this time, it’s on their turf.

Big Walnut (6-2, 4-1 OCC) is coming off a close defeat to New Albany, 34-31, on a last-minute field goal. No doubt, the Golden Eagles will still be thinking about that loss — as well as the loss to the Yellow Jackets last year.

Quarterback Tyler Beam led the Golden Eagles back from a 24-3 deficit last week. Beam has plenty of targets, including tight end Garrett Dandrea and wide receivers Grant Beam, Jordan Stimmell and Seth Wandling, all of whom are seniors. Lucas Garcia will get the bulk of the carries.

“This is a big, big, big challenge that we have this week,” Naples said. “Big Walnut is a big team that can run the ball and power it out, and we’re not very good at that right now.”
