HEBRON — The best of the Fredericktown Freddies cross country team took part in the final run of 2011. One of them, for the second straight year, reached the podium and All-Ohio status.
Emily Roberts placed fourth in the Division III girls race at the state cross country championship, held Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.
Roberts established her best time of the season, 18:46.75, nearly 30 seconds better than her previous best at the Centerburg Invitational. Despite this, she did not appear pleased with her run.
“I think I should have started a lot faster,” said Roberts. “I just kept hanging on. I think it worked pretty well how I’d planned it out.”
Roberts had set the bar high for herself, finishing second at last year’s state meet at Scioto Downs. This year, the race was moved to National Trail Raceway for the first time. When Roberts and her teammates went out on Thursday to test the course, they found it was flat — except for one steep hill in the last mile — but filled with obstacles.
