CENTERBURG — Fredericktown dialed it up a notch in the third quarter, rolling to a 47-27 victory over Centerburg in Mid-Buckeye Conference boys basketball action Friday at Centerburg.
The Freddies led just 20-17 early in the third quarter but turned up the defensive pressure, which fueled a 10-0 run to blow the game open.
“We talked a little at halftime about fouling them a little less and keeping them in front of us (defensively),” said Fredericktown assistant coach Mike Delaney, who was filling in for head coach Mark Delaney who missed the game to attend to a family medical situation. “I think how active we were on the ball and how much pressure we put on the ball really bothered them.”
The Freddies (2-0 overall, 1-0 MBC) also dialed up the offense in the third quarter, attacking the basket and getting some easy shots. Three of their buckets during the run were on drives through the lane. They also got some important stickbacks in the fourth quarter to keep the Trojans (0-2, 0-1) at bay.
“It was just 18-13 at halftime, but we couldn’t make a stop in the third quarter. They were definitely having their way with us,” said Centerburg coach John Marhefka. “Once we got down, we couldn’t dig our way out.
