FREDERICKTOWN — An early favorite has emerged in the race for the Mid-Buckeye Conference wrestling championship.
The Centerburg Trojans won both duals at the MBC quad held at Fredericktown High School on Wednesday.
In its first dual, Centerburg did something it had never done before — beat the defending conference champion Utica Redskins, 40-33.
The dual went back and forth, with both sides taking the lead. With the score tied at 30, it came down to the final three matches. At 126 pounds, Daniel Colopy gave the Trojans the advantage by pinning Dillon Marcum at the 1:48 mark. All Centerburg needed was a win in either of its final two matches, but Utica’s Nathaniel McCollum was able to overcome a bloody nose to defeat Chet Backiewicz, 11-5.
It came down to the final match, the 138-pound match between Centerburg’s Austin Glasscock and Utica’s Jayson Faller. Glasscock took a quick lead and never looked back, winning in a major decision, 12-0, and securing the win for the Trojans.
Centerburg’s Sean Gibson, Reed Hensel and Jacob Pack also secured pinfall victories in the dual.
