MOUNT VERNON — At the end of the first quarter of Friday’s girls basketball game, the Mount Vernon high school gym was almost silent.
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets were trailing the Franklin Heights Falcons, 10-8, in their Ohio Capital Conference showdown.
But, like a pool hall hustler, the Jackets suddenly turned it up. By the end of the game, Mount Vernon had earned a comfortable 68-20 victory.
Mount Vernon (4-12, 2-9 OCC) has been a Jeckyl-and-Hyde type of team all season. The team will come out looking sharp for a half, then fall flat and allow the opponents to walk all over them.
It showed again with the unsteady start to the game. This time, by the end, it was the Yellow Jackets who did the walking.
Every player on the varsity roster scored at least one field goal. Madi Montgomery led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. However, the Jackets played like a team full of leaders, clicking together like they haven’t done all season.
Franklin Heights (1-16, 0-11 OCC) took its first and only lead of the game late in the first period, when Cierra Thomas hit her second 3-pointer to make the score 10-8.
At the start of the second period, it all started going Mount Vernon’s way.
