MOUNT VERNON — Local senior amateur golfer Doug Savage spent the last three weeks in Florida, playing in five amateur tournaments. Savage played 19 rounds in all, averaged 72.8 strokes per round and shot a 68 twice to win three of the five tournaments.

The first tournament was played on the Southwest Florida Tour at Cypress Lakes Country Club in Fort Myers. His score of 149 (76-73) edged Jim Marcelak of Coral Springs, Fla., for the victory.

Savage traveled to Sarasota to play on the West Florida Golf Tour at the Donald Ross-designed Sara Bay Country Club course. Savage shot a 71 for the one-day tournament, including birdies on the final two holes, to pick up his second-straight win.

Savage’s third victory was at Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, on the Golfweek Am Tour. His round of 73 (39-34) gave him a one-shot victory over Tom Gallagher of The Villages.

“I was down there 22 days and played 21 of them,” said Savage. “Last winter I played well in Florida, but this was the best my game has been down there. To pick up three wins — I’m elated.”

Savage is the former head baseball coach and girls basketball coach at Mount Vernon High School. He currently assists the Mount Vernon golf team.
