MOUNT VERNON — For Senior Night, the Mount Vernon girls basketball team played like seasoned veterans.
The Yellow Jackets defeated the visiting Watkins Memorial Warriors, 44-33, in an Ohio Capital Conference showdown for their third win in their last four games.
Mount Vernon (6-13, 3-10 OCC) honored its four seniors — Katie Martin, Jordyn Peppers, Taylor Strack and Keli Thompson — before the game. All four started the game, and all four ended up playing vital roles in Tuesday’s victory.
Thompson, the team’s scoring leader, led Mount Vernon once again with 11 points.
“Keli’s our leader,” said Mount Vernon head coach Joe Rucker. “She’s the three-year letter winner who has fought through a lot of adversity — injuries and what-not — and she is our go-to player.
Peppers had one of her best games as a senior, scoring 10 points and bringing down a team-high eight rebounds.
“Jordyn is our strength and our toughness,” said Rucker. “And our attitude. She’s a hard-nosed player when she’s out there, and she’ll do what it takes to win.”
Strack was given an opportunity to start, and she took it by totaling five points and four boards.
