HILLIARD — There were no district championships for the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets at Saturday’s Division I district wrestling meet at Hilliard Darby High School.

However, there were two second-place finishes, as well as a few surprises.

The biggest one came in the form of Lucas Staten.

The freshman, along with Dakota Riley and Matt Lybarger, will represent Mount Vernon at the state wrestling meet at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus, beginning Thursday.

Staten, who had defeated one of the top 152-pound wrestlers in the state in Logan’s Sean Wotring on Friday, had to win one of his first two matches Saturday to qualify for state.

After dropping his first match, Staten took on Dublin Scioto’s Daniel Higuera. Taking control from the beginning, Staten landed two takedowns to take a quick 4-1 lead. He held on for a 7-2 victory that guaranteed at least a fourth-place finish. The top four in each weight class qualify for state.
