WORTHINGTON — Victory sure tasted sweet for the Centerburg girls basketball team Saturday.

The Trojans, who hadn’t won a tournament game in three years, continued their impressive run through the 2012 tournament with a 50-47 victory over North Union in the Division III district finals at Worthington Christian Middle School.

“This is just the second time in school history. It feels great for these kids,” said Centerburg coach Todd Nauman. “These juniors and seniors have worked really hard the last three or four years. We put a lot of time in in the off-season, trying to get ready for an opportunity like this. Obviously, we’ve fell short the last three years come the postseason. This is a team that had not won a post-season game and is now district champion. Yeah, I’m really proud and extremely happy for the kids.”

The Trojans (20-4) were fired up and ready as soon as they got off the bus. A suffocating defense (five straight NU turnovers) and an opportunistic offense sparked Centerburg to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game.

“I thought we got off the bus focused and ready to play,” said senior Mackenzie Stoyle. “North Union is a great team. We knew we had to come out and play just as hard as they did and we did.”
