REYNOLDSBURG — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets season came to an end at the hands of the No. 2 seeded Walnut Ridge Scots on Wednesday.
The Jackets fell in their Division I Central District semifinal game, 54-40, at the new Reynoldsburg High School.
The Scots, using their physical size and leaping ability, got off to a quick 8-0 lead. Dunks from their 6-foot-9 post player, senior Malik Dime and their leading scorer, 6-foot-4 Roy Alexander, who had 18 points, contributed to the early run.
The Jackets answered back with a 3-pointer from Seth Badger. That first basket, however, would be the one and only 3-pointer they had in the game. The Scots guarded the perimeter well throughout the rest of the contest and gave the Jackets few open looks outside.
The Jackets managed to close the gap to three, 15-12, early in the second quarter when Eric Ashbrook landed a bucket. Then, the Scots went on a 14-2 tear with Alexander, who threw in a 3-pointer near the end of the first half, leading the charge.
“Obviously, things didn’t go the way we wanted them to go tonight,” said Mount Vernon coach Kurt Kaufman. “We didn’t get off to the kind of start we needed to against a team like (Walnut Ridge.) They’re a great team.”
