MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon girls track team lost its coach and the school’s only state qualifier.

So, the task of putting together a winning program now falls into the hands of Kathryn Thayer.

Thayer was the Mount Vernon Middle School track for three years before accepting her new position. In addition, she has spent time coaching at Kenyon College. Her prior experience means she has some familiarity with the area — and with her team.

The Jackets return 13 letter-winners; however, none of them have ever qualified for regionals. Thayer would not say which girls she believed could break that barrier, preferring not to name any individuals. However, judging by last year’s results, there’s some work to be done.

“I would expect them (the letter-winners) to continue what they’ve been doing,” said Thayer.
