CENTERBURG — On a cold, blustery day early in the season, it’s important to capitalize on your opponent’s mistakes.
The Centerburg baseball team did just that Monday. The Trojans scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 4-3 victory over the visiting Scots.
“We finally found a way to break through late,” said Centerburg coach Joe Smith. “After we gave up that three-run inning, it was kind of bleak, but our guys believed and battled and found a way to get it done. That’s what it’s all about.
“Any time you can get that first win, it’s big. Especially against a program like that.”
Trailing 3-0, the Trojans got things rolling in the sixth, thanks to some timely hits and some mistakes by the Scots. Lucas McGovern got the inning started when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Justin Keys followed with a single and Dakota Mead reached on an error to load up the bases.
Highland had an opportunity to get out of the inning unscathed when Jacob Sutton hit a smash right back to pitcher Jason Hertz. The Scots hurler hesitated, then threw the ball home where Marcus Chapman tagged out McGovern. Highland got the out, but not a possible inning-ending double play.
