MOUNT VERNON — The Delaware Pacers stepped into The Hive and ran right into a swarm. The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets volleyball team stung their archrival in straight sets, 25-8, 25-15, 25-14.
The Jackets are finding ways to fill the leadership void created by last year’s graduation and it showed Tuesday night as they won their second league matchup of the year.
“I like our leadership,” said Mount Vernon coach Alan Cassell. “We had, what some people consider, a rough start to the year but, considering who we played, it was OK. All four of my seniors, and even my younger guys, are showing some leadership.”
Confidence and hard work were two of the other key ingredients.
“I just think we came in with a lot of confidence,” said Mount Vernon hitter Josiah Burney (four kills, three assists). “We’ve been practicing hard lately. We knew that we needed to step it up. We don’t have the leaders we had last year like Chris Omahan. We didn’t have the big hitters but, I feel that we play better as a team.”
