MOUNT VERNON — The anticipated showdown between the Centerburg Trojans and the Fredericktown Freddies in the 4x800 relay highlighted the girls’ portion of the lightning-shortened 2012 Mount Vernon News SpecTRACKular at Yellow Jackets Stadium on Friday.

Officials canceled the meet around 8 p.m. due to ongoing thunderstorms in the area. Before participants and spectators were cleared from the stadium and sent to their cars, most of the field events had completed.

The only girls running event that was held was the 4x800.

And it was a thriller.

Fredericktown — with Emily Roberts, Brittany Silva, Chloe Stalnaker and Halla Jones— hung alongside Centerburg. In the final leg, the Trojans, with their team of Amelia Holt, Ali Socie, Torrie Purdy and Alyssa Burton, pulled ahead in the third leg and hung on to win with a time of 10:32.30.

“I gave it my all because the other girls pushed it, too,” said Burton. “We just went in there to give it our all and make it happen.”

“We tried to get a lead and surge away from (Fredericktown),” said Socie. “They are the toughest competition that we have come up against so far. It was our goal to beat them.”

All four of the Fredericktown (10:49.47) girls posted PRs, but that wasn’t quite enough to catch the Trojans.

“We did pretty well and I was proud of everyone,” said Roberts. “Centerburg is pretty awesome. We just keep pushing each other and making each other better.”

Meanwhile, the Mount Vernon girls took first and second in three of the four field events that were completed with shot put and discus winner Emily Miglin leading the way.
