MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon 10-year-old All-Stars batted around twice in the second inning and once, each, in the first and third innings, as they bombed North Fork, 25-0, in Thursday’s run-rule-shortened District 5 Little League Tournament game.
Mount Vernon, which had 22 hits in the game, opened up with five runs on five hits in the first inning. That included an RBI triple by second baseman Caleb Fry, who would later score.
It was in the 17-run second inning where the team removed any doubt as to the outcome of this game. Mount Vernon sent 22 batters to the plate, churning out a total of 15 hits. Shortstop Kamden Breckler led the way in the monster inning with two singles and a double, scoring twice and driving in four runs in just one inning. Breckler credited his teammates for the opportunity to get those at-bats.
“That’s why we got up three times (in that inning),” said Breckler, who was 4-for-4 in the game. “All of us were swinging the bats and we were hitting the ball out to the outfield. We were getting doubles, triples and singles. That’s how we won.”
Mount Vernon center fielder Brandon Spearman also went 3-for-3 in the second inning, driving in three runs and scoring three times. For Spearman, it was an unexpected pleasure.
“I never thought I would do it,” said Spearman. “I guess we were just hitting everything. It was really weird.”
All of this made it easy on Mount Vernon starting pitcher Spencer Bills, who just had to go out there and throw strikes.
“I’m just throwing strikes and doing whatever I can for the team,” said Bills, who added a pair of singles in the second. “Everybody on this team is good to each other and we just like playing baseball.”
