MOUNT VERNON — It was a clean sweep for the Golden Gales of Lancaster, who spoiled the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets’ girls tennis home opener.
In the singles matches, Mount Vernon’s Katey Durbin was upended by Lancaster’s Taylor Mulder in straight sets, 0-6, 0-6. Mulder’s teammate, Bailey Kuhn, had a little more trouble handling Mount Vernon’s Mackenzie MacClure. After a game effort by McClure, she dropped the match, 6-7(0-4), 2-6. Mount Vernon’s Elena Garcia lost her singles match to Lancaster’s Sierra Patrick, 1-6, 4-6. McClure and others were hitting overhead serves and some authoritative returns throughout the matches.
“That’s one of the things that we have worked on with all the girls that you’ve got to not be tentative,” said Mount Vernon coach Steve Tier. “You’ve got to have a game plan and you’ve got to try it. You’ve got to keep doing it forcefully and with authority and not to be tentative and shorten up your strokes.”
Mount Vernon’s No.1 doubles team of Chloe Hulman and Corin Sponsler were defeated in straight sets, losing to Jessica Bell and Kaelie Tripp of Lancaster, 2-6, 2-6. The Jackets’ No.2 doubles team of Nichole Moore and Lizzy Lynn lost to Abby Heston and Sara Effinger, 4-6, 3-6.
