MARION — The Mount Vernon football team was clicking on all cylinders in its opener Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets ran the ball well offensively and shut down a vaunted rushing attack from Marion Harding to pull out a 27-0 victory at Harding.
“It’s always nice to win the first week,” said Mount Vernon coach Anthony Naples, “but we’ve still got a long way to go.”
The Jackets opened up the scoring with a 50-yard jaunt from sophomore running back J.D. Orr in the first half. They then broke things open in the second half.
Quarterback Greg Briggs hooked up with Tyler Galbraith on a 25-yard scoring pass and then Orr cranked out another 20-yard run for a second score in the third period. Jordan Crabtree finished up the scoring with a 1-yard run in the fourth.
“Our offensive line and tailbacks did a great job tonight. We ran the ball well and the offensive line pushed them back,” Naples said.
