MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets had full control for one set in Thursday’s Ohio Capital Conference match against the Olentangy Braves.
Then the Braves bounced back. What happened next played out like a heavyweight title fight, with solid blows on both sides but with neither team gaining a clear advantage.
Then, in the final set, the Braves took over. They won the final seven points — the longest run by either team all night — to claim an 18-25, 25-22, 28-26, 19-25, 15-7 victory over the Jackets in a two-hour, three-minute volleyball match at The Hive.
“It could have been a number of things,” said Mount Vernon assistant coach Courtney Rabold, when asked how her team let the match slip away. “In the end, mentally, once you’re down by that much, when you only have 15 to go, it’s a lost fight. We had nothing at that time. But you never know. One hit at the right time and it could have gone either way.”
The fun began late in the second set, when Mount Vernon went on an 11-4 run to take a 22-21 lead. From that point, no team had more than a three-point lead until Mount Vernon led, 14-10, in the fourth set.
“We told our front row to just kill it,” said Rabold. “Our front row did amazing. Katelyn Dufur had some amazing kills.”
Dufur stepped up her game, totaling 13 kills on the night. Dufur blocked spike after spike by Olentangy throughout the entire match. She is credited with 11 blocks.
