MOUNT VERNON — When teams are on a winning streak, it seems like everything goes their way — the way the ball bounces, call from the officials, etc. But, when it’s the other way around, teams just can’t seem to get a break.
Tuesday, the Mount Vernon girls soccer team was looking to get out of its funk and break its four-game losing streak. But, the Jackets weren’t able to get a break when they needed and Big Walnut came away with a 3-0 victory at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
“We started on a good winning streak and after having all these straight loses, our confidence is not that great right now,” said Mount Vernon coach Emanuel Kladias.
Big Walnut opened the scoring on a set play, something that’s been a bit of a problem for the Jackets.
“They scored a goal, unfortunately, from a set play. We were not ready, and it cost us again,” Kladias said.
Even trailing 1-0, the Jackets (4-5) had an opportunity to knot up the game. That’s when the breaks fell the other way and Big Walnut took advantage.
“I think we deserved a penalty kick when we were down 1-0. It would have been a totally different ballgame. They didn’t give it to us and after a minute, they scored a second goal on us. After that, it’s a big gap to cover that score,” Kladias said.
