MOUNT VERNON — For a football team, winning can be a habit. Losing can be one, too.
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets have already been through both, and it’s not even the midway point of the season.
After a horrendous showing against Marion Harding on Sept. 7, the Jackets seemingly took the first half off against Franklin Heights, allowing the Falcons to lead before rattling off four touchdowns to come away with a 35-21 victory.
“We thought our athleticism would be enough to stop them,” said Mount Vernon wideout/cornerback Logan Rhea. “We didn’t do reads or look after our guys. We realized that we weren’t going to let ourselves lose. So we regrouped.”
“We’d lost the week before,” said Mount Vernon head coach Anthony Naples, “and it took us a whole half to register how to get back to doing things right and feel better about ourselves.”
Mount Vernon (3-1, 1-0 Ohio Capital Conference) faces the final test of the first half of the season — a game at Yellow Jacket Stadium against the Watkins Memorial Warriors.
