MOUNT VERNON — Before Thursday’s game, members of the Mount Vernon girls soccer team pledged not to allow their five-game losing streak to continue.
It didn’t.
Mount Vernon took an early lead and held on after a late Newark offensive surge to play to a 1-1 draw at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
“They showed that they didn’t want to lose the game,” said Mount Vernon head coach Emmanuel Kladias. “They put a lot of hard work into this game. I’m really proud of them.”
The Jackets (4-5-1) played a solid first half both on offense and defense. In the 11th minute, Mount Vernon’s Kaylee Meade had a shot saved by Newark goalkeeper Amanda Smith. Five minutes later, Abigail Smith took a pass from Kelsey Ries and fired it at the wide-open net, but it flew just high.
