MOUNT VERNON — In a battle between the Yellow Jackets and the Warriors, it was Mother Nature who won the first round.
Mount Vernon and Watkins Memorial sought shelter from Friday night’s lightning storm with the Jackets leading, 27-21, at the 9:40 mark in the fourth quarter.
The suspended game will resume at Yellow Jacket Stadium at 4:30 today.
The first lightning flash came at 9:33 p.m. The next one came 25 minutes later, just as officials were deciding whether to bring the teams back to the field.
OHSAA rules state there must be a 30-minute delay after any lightning is seen in the area.
Before the light show over everyone’s heads, Mount Vernon (3-1, 1-0 Ohio Capital Conference) led the fireworks on the field. Lucas Staten took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.
