MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon girls soccer team has been moving forward all season.
On Tuesday, it took an inevitable step back.
The Yellow Jackets struggled in all facets of Tuesday’s match against Ohio Capital Conference rival Delaware Hayes. The 5-0 score on the Yellow Jacket Stadium scoreboard as time expired told the story by itself.
“We made a lot of mistakes today,” said Mount Vernon head coach Emanuel Kladias. “You can’t say the girls didn’t put any effort, but we did a lot of wrong things.
“We’ve had some losses. But this is definitely one of our worst losses this year.”
The Jackets, whose winless streak is now at seven — they haven’t won since defeating New Philadelphia on Aug. 30 — showed a few early flashes, but couldn’t compete with the Pacers as the match wore on.
Mount Vernon (4-6-1) actually had the first scoring opportunity of the match with a corner kick in just the second minute of play. But the shot went wide. Mount Vernon would create only three more opportunities the entire match.
Hayes, on the other hand, began pouring on the chances. The Pacers (2-6-3) had their first corner kick in the ninth minute, their first shot on goal in the 16th, and their first goal in the 17th. On the play, Hayes’ Taylor McGinnis sent the ball nearly half the length of the field to teammate Aly Smiley, who dribbled past defenders the rest of the way and scored.
The goal came just two minutes after Mount Vernon’s best chance to score. Abigail Smith took a free kick from near the box and banged the shot off the post.
Later, with just seconds left in the first half, Mount Vernon had another big opportunity slip away. Midfielder Kelsey Ries broke away from the defense but allowed her dribble to get ahead of her. Hayes goalie Taryn Sweeney dove on top of the ball, but it appeared to slip out, allowing Ries to knock it into the goal. However, the official disallowed the goal, determining that Sweeney had control of the ball and Ries knocked it away.
