MOUNT VERNON — Now the challenge begins. The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets take on their first traditional powerhouse on Friday when they face defending Ohio Capital Conference champion Olentangy Orange.
It’s Homecoming, which means there will be extra energy in the stands at Yellow Jacket Stadium. Mount Vernon head coach Anthony Naples promises, however, that his team will be focused on the game at hand.
“The first thing, and the most imporant thing right now, is the game,” said Naples. “There’s more fun when you win at Homecoming than when you lose. So, one step at a time. Game’s first. Then we can enjoy some things.”
Last week’s victory by Mount Vernon over Watkins Memorial, 34-21, may have come as a bit of a surprise by some accounts. The Jackets were coming off what Naples described as “the worst defensive practices ever” that week. But the defense came to play Friday — and, as it turned out, Saturday — to shut down the Warriors when needed.
The defensive line sacked Watkins quarterback Ben Shroyer twice and threw his team’s runners for losses seven times. Matt Lybarger led the attack with three tackles for loss and an interception.
