CENTERBURG — Two high-powered offenses squared off Friday at Centerburg. Of course, that meant defense stole the show.
Danville held Centerburg scoreless in the final 31 minutes of the game and went on to beat the Trojans, 23-14, in a Mid-Buckeye Conference showdown.
“Our defense rose to the occasion,” said Danville coach Ed Honabarger. “They (Centerburg) did a good job hitting us where we were weak, passing wise. We mixed it up in the second half and were able to slow them down.”
“We just made too many mistakes. We did not execute and we beat ourselves,” said Centerburg coach Jim Stoyle.
The game started out as advertised, with 21 points being put up in the first quarter. Danville (5-1 overall, 3-0 MBC) got things going midway through the first quarter, marching 52 yards on just four plays to put the first points on the board. After a huge run by quarterback Bryce Staats, fullback Kyle Shultz finished the drive with a 4-yard plunge.
The Trojans (3-3, 1-2) struck back just as quickly, scoring just three minutes later. Quarterback Tyler Stoyle hit on two big pass plays, the second being a 12-yard touchdown strike to Sean Borden. The first was another hookup with Borden, as the senior receiver made a nice play, tipping the ball to himself for a 25-yard completion on a third and long play.
Danville bounced right back, scoring less than two minutes later when Staats hit Cade Mickley on a 31-yard touchdown strike. The play started with a bad snap to Staats, but the senior quarterback did what he did all night — made the most of the play. He scooped up the ball, scrambled and hit Mickley for the score.
