MOUNT VERNON — In one of the loudest and most thrilling matches all year, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets handed Big Walnut its first loss in Ohio Capital Conference play on Tuesday.
The Jackets withstood two comebacks by the Eagles to win, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 7-25, 15-10, at the Hive.
“It’s what we’ve been trying to get them to do all year,” said Mount Vernon head coach Alan Cassell.
Mount Vernon (13-5, 9-2 OCC) never gave in to Big Walnut’s speed at the net. Melissa Hall led a group of fired-up Yellow Jackets that matched the Eagles point for point. Hall led the team with 12 kills, earning nearly half of them in the final set.
Mount Vernon fell behind in that set, 6-3, before going on an 8-3 run. It was in that run that Hall and Madi Montgomery dominated, with Hall getting three of her team-high four blocks.
“Since (the fifth set) is only to 15, it’s important to get ahead, because there’s not much time to catch up if we start down,” said Hall. “This really turned our season around.”
