GRANVILLE — Utica High School’s lone representative at the Division II Central District golf tournament fell short in his bid at a spot at state.
Broc Stradley finished with a round of 84 at Granville Golf Club on Wednesday, 12 strokes above par and nine behind the two eventual state qualifiers.
“This was a pretty good season,” said Stradley. “Everybody was out there to have fun, have a good time and be competitive. It was an enjoyable senior year.”
Stradley’s fortunes were good on the front nine, where he shot a 40. But things turned south in a hurry.
“I blew up on the back nine,” said Stradley. “I had a few doubles. I got behind a tree and had to take an extra stroke and punch out.”
The gusty wind in Granville made tee shots significantly shorter and, consequently, iron shots had to be longer and more precise.
“I wasn’t doing my up-and-downs as I usually do,” he said. “I couldn’t hit a green in regulation.”
Stradley, who golfed competitively at Granville only twice before, was part of a threesome which included Northridge’s Matt Simmons, who also finished with 84. Simmons struggled on the front nine, shooting 44, and triple-bogeyed No. 11 before calming down.
Stradley said partnering with Simmons made the round more enjoyable.
“We picked each other up when we got down,” he said. “It probably helped out a little bit.”
