SUNBURY — You play with fire long enough and you’re going to get burned.
The Mount Vernon football team learned that lesson the hard way Friday night. The Yellow Jackets committed four costly turnovers and watched as host Big Walnut pulled out a 27-14 Ohio Capital Conference victory.
Two of those turnovers led directly to Big Walnut points. The first was a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown by BW’s Adam Shaheen early in the second quarter. The second pick resulted in a fourth-quarter Eagle touchdown just three plays later.
Mount Vernon (5-2 overall, 3-1 OCC) dominated, especially on the defensive side of the ball, for most of the game. But, giving the Eagles the ball four times in MV territory proved too much for the Jackets.
“You can’t win games, you can’t beat good teams having turnovers,” said Mount Vernon coach Anthony Naples. “You can’t have four turnovers and win a game against a quality team like this.”
The Jackets’ ground-and-pound offense looked unstoppable on the opening drive of the game. MV moved the ball 58 yards on 17 plays, eating up more than nine minutes of the clock, on its opening drive. Running back J.D. Orr was the main threat, running 10 times for 28 yards. But the Jackets were stuffed inside the 10-yard line and forced to attempt a field goal, which ended up being blocked by the Eagles (5-2, 3-1).
