COLUMBUS — Faithe Carr didn’t have the kind of first round she had hoped for.

But, the Centerburg junior finished strong on Friday at the Division II State Golf Tournament, ending her round with three pars on four holes at the Ohio State University’s Gray course.

Her first-round score of 99 doesn’t put her among the leaders — Carr is 27 strokes behind the individual leader, Maddy Mullins from Sandusky Perkins — but she is still optimistic about today’s final round, which begins around 10 a.m.

“I have to practice my chipping, because that cost me some strokes,” said Carr. “That, and my sand hitting, and probably getting my drives down.”

After struggling with her drives and her irons for most of the day, Carr finally appeared relaxed by hole No. 6. (She started on the back nine.) Her drives were long and straight, and she hit the green in regulation twice.

“I’ve been working on trying to compress the ball for a long time, and making sure my swings are straight,” said Carr. “In the beginning, that wasn’t happening.”

Carr struggled at the start of the day. She shot a 56 on the back nine, collecting three bogies and no pars. She had her first par on No. 1, a straight, level par-4. She missed the green in regulation but had a nice chip, then hit a six-foot put to save par.
