SUNBURY — Mount Vernon girls volleyball head coach Alan Cassell wanted to see how his team would fare against the best in Central Ohio.
He found out. And it wasn’t pretty.
The Yellow Jackets played their Central District semifinal against top-seeded Dublin Coffman on Wednesday. Coffman, ranked eighth in the state in the most recent Division I coaches’ poll, looked like an uncrowned champion as it took it to Mount Vernon, 25-11, 25-5, 25-18, at Big Walnut High School.
“They are a very good team,” said Mount Vernon head coach Alan Cassell. “But we didn’t play as well as I thought we could play.”
Mount Vernon (16-9) hadn’t been swept in a best-of-five match all season. The Jackets had managed to win at least one set in every match except at Worthington Kilbourne, which was best-of-three.
As the final set played out, Mount Vernon looked determined to keep the streak alive.
Senior Melissa Hall began the third set on fire, scoring two quick kills. Parker VanFossen followed, and Madi Montgomery scored an impressive block. Later, Hall had another smash to give the Jackets an 11-8 lead.
It could be argued that Coffman was shuffling its lineup as a tuneup for Saturday’s district final. However, the Shamrocks are deep in talent and don’t tend to fall off when they build a big lead.
