HOWARD — The 56th edition of the Devil-Dog game started out as a high-scoring competitive battle — and turned into something much uglier.
The Danville Blue Devils marched into Chet Looney Stadium and defeated the East Knox Bulldogs, 46-21, on Saturday. The win secured the No. 1 seed in Region 23 as well as an outright Mid-Buckeye Conference championship for the Blue Devils, while the loss knocked the Bulldogs out of the playoffs.

Danville quarterback Bryce Staats threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns, ran for another and had a hand in five two-point conversions. The game gave him 2,039 yards passing — a school record for one season — and 1,063 yards rushing.
“(Staats) has done a great job, considering it’s our first year running (the spread), and it’s his first year at quarterback,” said Danville head coach Ed Honabarger. “It’s apples and oranges compared to what we had been doing. Not just him, but the rest of the team has been receptive to it and they’ve worked their butts off. I’m prouder of this more than any other group I’ve coached, just because the way we switched stuff around. I don’t think anyone figured we’d be 9-1. I don’t think anyone on the coaching staff figured that.”
Corey Geog had a career night for the Blue Devils as a slot back. In his final regular-season game, Geog caught eight passes for 153 yards and two scores. He also scored the first two-point conversion on another throw from Staats.
