SPARTA — Scoring champs, great runners and coaches will be among the 11 new members of the Highland Local School District Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ken Throckmorton (Sparta/Marengo), Lynn Gilt (Chesterville), Don Givens (Sparta/Marengo), Jerry Bower (coach/contributor), Don Davidson (class of 1968), Larry Squires (1977), Belinda Cremeans Pinkerton (1983), Jim Gray (1986), Shelly Squires Hornsby (1988), Lori Hilton Mack (1992) and Amanda Knapp (1994) are the second class to be inducted into the hall of fame. The class was announced Monday at a press conference at Highland High School.
“I was excited. I was thrilled,” said Squires-Hornsby. “It does mean a lot because back then it didn’t seem like they did a lot for the girls sports. To have them reach out there now, it’s overwhelming.”
Squires-Hornsby was Highland’s first 12-letter winner, excelling in volleyball, basketball and softball. In volleyball, she was a first-team all-Mid-Ohio Conference choice two times and first-team all-district once. In basketball, Hornsby was named honorable mention all league her freshman year, then first team the following three years. She was named honorable mention all state her junior year. In softball, she was first-team all-MOC her senior year.
