MOUNT VERNON — Sixty-four of the best billiards players from around the state will meet in downtown Mount Vernon at high noon on Saturday, Dec. 8, to see who is the best 8-ball player.
Double-A local favorites like former state champions Chris Banbury, Chris Poland and Jake Strohl will be among the elite competitors for the double-elimination tournament. Money and other prizes will be up for grabs on seven pool tables at the Office Sports Bar, located at 20 East Ohio Ave.
In its brief existence, the tournament has created quite a following.
“This tournament was one of the biggest ones in Ohio, going back eight years ago,” said current tournament director Jody Boggs, who is also a regional manager for an area elevator company. “It was probably one of the biggest, most well known tournaments around. You could go anywhere in the state and, if someone saw a shirt with ‘The Office’ on it, they might say, ‘Hey, you guys are from The Office? That was one of the best tournaments I’d ever been to.’ It was so big back then. Pool was a different game back then.”
Over the years, this tournament has drawn plenty of big name players like speed pool champion Dave Pearson, trick shot champion Paul Gerni and world 7-ball champion Cory Duel.
Boggs handles nearly every aspect of the tournament, from making sure the computer scoring system is operational right down to purchasing the felt for the tables.
