MOUNT VERNON — With fall sports done in the Knox County area, winter sports start tonight with the opening of high school girls basketball.
East Knox, Fredericktown and Utica all begin their seasons tonight, while Centerburg and Highland get started Saturday.
The Bulldogs travel to Smithville for a 7 p.m. varsity start. The Freddies are at Mount Gilead where the junior varsity gets started at 6 p.m. Utica at Heath also starts at 6.
Saturday, the defending Mid-Buckeye Conference champion Centerburg Trojans play their annual rivalry game against the Highland Scots. The game, at Highland, begins at 6 p.m. with junior varsity action.
Utica plays the first local home game Saturday as well, hosting Lakewood at 6 p.m.
Mount Vernon begins its season at home Tuesday against Westerville Central. Danville’s season also begins Tuesday, as the Blue Devils travel to Marion Catholic.
Boys basketball begins Friday, Nov. 30. The first high school wrestling meets take place Saturday, Dec. 1.
