MOUNT VERNON — As more and more women join the ranks of hunters in America, entire families are becoming involved in the sport. With different companies marketing lines of clothing and other products that are tailored to the female hunter, there is no doubt that the hunting demographic has grown more strongly female. Women represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the hunting population.

Women who were not involved in the sport as youngsters have learned it as adults. For many, the allure of spending their days in the woods and communing with nature got them hooked. Spending hours of quality time with their spouse and children has proven to be a big bonus.

“My husband (David) got me into hunting 14 years ago,” said Annette Mills, a dedicated hunter who lives just outside of Bladensburg. “I thought, ‘This looks like fun.’ I was really interested in learning how to handle a firearm, hunting the animal, processing the animal — the whole nine yards was what I wanted to do.”

For Mount Vernon’s Gretchen Stump, this is her first year back as a hunter after years of raising children. She enjoys the quality time with her husband, William, and family. Meanwhile, her children (now in the teens and 20s) are discovering a different side to their mom.
