MOUNT VERNON — Defense ruled the roost Tuesday when Clear Fork invaded Mount Vernon.
The Lady Colts followed a strong and quick defensive effort to overcome a tough night offensively and came away with a 57-46 victory over the host Yellow Jackets in a non-conference girls basketball game.
“This was a big one. It’s a huge confidence builder,” said Clear Fork coach Heidi Roush. “We knew they would have trouble inbounding so we tried to press them like crazy. That’s our bread and butter. We try to score off our defense.”
“I think Clear Fork had a nice game plan. They got up and pressed us a little bit,” said Mount Vernon coach Joe Rucker. “We just weren’t there intensity wise from the beginning and I think Clear Fork had something to do with that.”
It didn’t appear like it was going to be like that early. Mount Vernon (1-2 overall), behind the play of Sierra Basista and Hannah King, took an early lead. Basista scored six of her team-high 17 points in the first 11 minutes and handed out three assists as the Jackets took a 19-13 lead early into the second quarter.
