SPARTA — The Centerburg Trojans knew it wasn’t going to be easy when they went up the road a few miles to face the Highland Scots — their fierce, backyard nonconference rival. The Scots gave them a defensive battle, but the Trojans gave it right back. Lifted by Tyler Stoyle’s 22-point performance, the Trojans struggled to a 39-26 win on Tuesday.
“It’s always tough playing (Highland),” said Centerburg coach John Marhefka. “Their coach Mike Hoyng does such a great job and they play such good defense.”
The Scots took the early 7-4 lead on solid defense and a Jett Swetland 3-pointer. Highland’s defense was getting the stops but the shooting was cold on both sides. Swetland five points and four rebounds for the game.
Stoyle fed 6-foot-7 junior Clayton Schaefer (four points) with a pass underneath. After Schaefer scored, Stoyle hit a layup of his own to give the Trojans (2-0) an 8-7 lead. Curtis Belcher (four points) landed a 3-pointer midway through the second quarter to take the lead back for Highland, 13-12.
