UTICA — Ordinarily, landing half-a-dozen 3-pointers and ringing up 26 points makes for a pretty fair night of basketball for any individual.
But, for Tory Minton and her Utica Redskins teammates, it wasn’t nearly enough.
River View’s Andi Daugherty threw in a season-high 40 points and the visiting Black Bears (4-1) downed the Redskins, 56-47, in nonconference girls basketball on Wednesday. The loss is the first of the year for the Redskins.
“(Andi Daugherty) is a fine player — an excellent player,” said Utica head coach Terry Logue. “She really lit us up tonight.”
Daugherty (eight rebounds, four steals) was held to 12 points in the first half. Her sister, Katie Daugherty (seven points), landed three buckets in the first quarter and helped the Bears use their height to dominate under the boards early and open up an 11-4 lead. The Bears won the team rebound battle, 17-13.
Minton was able to open things up by hitting her first two 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the opening quarter to pull the Redskins to within three, 13-10.
“We were outsized, big time,” said Minton, “but we all helped each other out. We all tried to pick each other up when we got burned.”
