HOWARD — A fast start by the Danville Blue Devils was too much for the East Knox Bulldogs to overcome.
The Blue Devils went 9-for-14 from the field in the first period, scoring 25 points and jumping to a 16-point lead. That lead would hold up in the end for a 60-44 Mid-Buckeye Conference victory at The Pound in Howard.
Danville’s Corie Inverso scored 12 of those 25 points. The junior went on to lead both teams with a career-high 29 points. On the other side of the ball, Inverso led the Blue Devils with nine steals.
“(Inverso)’s always been really, really solid,” said Danville head coach Shane Henry. “We see it every day in practice. Other people haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Defensively, I think she’s as good as anybody in the league.”
Bri Staats, the Danville point guard, scored 11 points. All three of her assists were dishes to Inverso — it appeared Inverso was open on nearly every play.
“If you’re going to guard Bri, and not let her shoot it, Corie can score, too,” said Henry. “She likes to score. She gets a few steals and layups, and they’re huge. She’ll score from anywhere. Doesn’t bother her a bit.”
