Danville falls to Coshocton at home

DANVILLE— Size does not always win the game, but it certainly does not hurt as the Coshocton Redskins took advantage of strong post play to work their way past Danville 47-33 in their match-up Saturday night. The Blue Devils were limited to single digits in the first and third quarter, which allowed Coshocton to open up the big lead.

The Redskins (8-3) came out strong in the opening quarter, getting points from three different players and they worked their way out to a 9-3 advantage. Danville’s Tracy Payne hit a free-throw to cut the lead before the end of the first quarter.

Tracy Payne followed the free-throw with a three-pointer to open the second quarter to cut the deficit to two. The Redskins fired right back, as Kelly Ash scored the next six points of the game to stretch the lead to 15-7. The Blue Devils (8-4) would use two three-pointers and a three-point play to keep in it, but Coshocton managed to walk into halftime up 22-16.

“We were able to be pretty active with the ball tonight,” said Coshocton head coach Brent Carter. “We were able to do that in part because of the strong play at the post position. That really opened things up for us.”

The Blue Devils were shut down again in the third quarter, as they were limited to just two points in the period. Kitina Neiger knocked in six points to lead Coshocton, as they stretched the lead to 34-18.

“”We’re a small team, and we had a difficult time matching up out there,” said Danville head coach Jack O’Roarke. “We just had a lot of mental mistakes out there. We have a lot of young players out there, and we really played like it at times.”

Danville did not give up, however, and was able to cut the lead to ten at one point, 43-33. Tracy Payne had nine points during the stretch as the Blue Devils were able to create several turnovers using their full-court press. The Redskins hit their free-throws down the stretch, as Jamison went 4-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the victory.

“Our second chance points helped us out a lot tonight. We really used to the height advantage to work the offensive boards.” said Carter. “ I have to give credit to Danville, though. They never gave up, and pushed us the whole way.”

The Redskins were led by Ash with 15 points and six rebounds. She also added two assists. Jamison finished the night with 14 points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Nieger added eight points and three assists.

Tracy Payne led Danville with 16 points and four rebounds. Katie Payne added seven points. Miller finished the evening with four rebounds, three steals, and two points.

“We’re making a lot of progress, but we still have a long way to go,” said O’Roarke. “The girls played hard tonight. We were really scrappy out there. The effort is there, we just need to work on the mental mistakes.”

Danville returns to action next Thursday when they resume Mid-Buckeye Conference play with a showdown with Loudonville. That game is set for a six p.m. junior varsity start.
