GAMBIER — John Rinka came to Kenyon College in the mid-1960s. When he was finished, he had rewritten the Lords’ basketball record book.
Rinka, a member of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame, visited the Kenyon Athletic Center to talk basketball with old friends and fans before Friday’s women’s game against Denison University. The 1970 graduate was a three year All-American in basketball and an academic All-American in his senior year. He was a phenomenal free-throw shooter, who led the NCAA — all levels — in shooting percentage from the line in his senior year with 89 percent.
His college career total 3,251 points still stands as the most ever scored by a Kenyon player. Incredibly, he reached that total before the 3-point line and the shot clock were introduced into college basketball.
Now 65, Rinka looks back on his days at Kenyon and how they changed his life.
