CENTERBURG — The matchup between the Centerburg Trojans and the Pleasant Spartans didn’t appear to be a close one. On paper, anyway.
But, when you’re the defending regional runners-up, you should never take anything for granted.
Pleasant hung around until the final minutes of Thursday’s nonconference game before Centerburg used a 7-0 scoring run to shake the pesky Spartans, 47-35.
It could be argued that the Trojans looked ahead to the second half of their Mid-Buckeye Conference schedule, set to begin Saturday against Fredericktown. Or, perhaps, they spent too much time feeling out their competition. Either way, Centerburg head coach Todd Nauman used one word to describe his team’s performance.
“Ugly,” Nauman said after the game. “It was an ugly performance. There’s no need to sugarcoat and say what it isn’t.”
The Trojans spent virtually all of the contest in front, except for about a minute of the first period. However, they never managed to pull away. Their biggest lead in the first half was seven, coming midway through the second period after Stacy Fielding’s first of two 3-pointers. Late in the third, the lead finally grew to eight following Fielding’s other trey.
The lead never made it to double-digits until the closing minutes.
