CENTERBURG — “They didn’t quit.” With three words, Mount Vernon girls basketball coach Joe Rucker summed up his team’s performance at Centerburg on Monday. The Yellow Jackets came from 11 points down in the fourth quarter to produce a 14-0 run and stun the host Trojans, 52-49, in nonconference play.
“We rally behind one another. It’s that ‘refuse to lose’ attitude,” said Rucker. “We only have seven, but every girl that stepped on that court had that attitude. And we made the plays when we had to.”
Centerburg coach Todd Nauman summed it up a different way.
“We took an 11-point lead and we gave it back,” Nauman said.
Mount Vernon (8-6) had trailed since the first half of the game. Centerburg’s lead reached double-digits in the third, peaking at 12 late in the quarter. The Jackets narrowed the gap to six several times, but Centerburg kept coming back.
