MOUNT VERNON — The YMCA is where basketball was invented. And now the Mount Vernon YMCA and its sports director, Eric Boggs, are trying to make sure it remains the sport of choice.
Boggs was hired in 2011 and the first thing he noticed was that basketball was on the decline. His job was to bring it back to life.
“When I was first hired at the Y, they gave me some time to turn it around. We made some big changes. I added more structure. Every league is specific so that each coach and volunteer knows what we expect as far as teaching the children at that age group what they should know so they are progressing their skills properly,” Boggs said. “We run basketball leagues from preschool through seniors in high school. So we’re covering the entire spectrum of school-age children.”
As a child progresses through the YMCA basketball program, he or she learns more about the game. As preschoolers, they are taught the basics of dribbling and shooting, then begin playing defense, learning different offenses and the nuances of the game as they move up the ladder.
