SPARTA — The Highland Scots treated their fans to three quarters of good, exciting basketball on their home court, taking a 40-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
It was in the final quarter that the Mount Gilead Indians opened with eight unanswered points. They proceeded to go on an 18-2 scoring rampage, hanging a 60-51 defeat on the Scots in Tuesday evening’s Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference basketball matchup.
“We fell apart in the fourth quarter,” said Highland coach Mike Hoyng. “We gave up three straight three-point plays. You can’t do that as a basketball team and expect to win.”
Highland (2-11, 2-6 MOAC) hardly looked like the team that held the Indians at bay for 24 minutes of basketball when Mount Gilead’s Ethan Harris (13 points, nine rebounds) scored to start the fourth quarter. Teammate Nick Pomeroy (14 points) followed with a 3-pointer. On the Indians’ next trip down the floor, Harris got the putback off an offensive rebound and hit the ensuing free throw to pull his team to within a single point, 40-39, with 6:21 left on the game clock.
