JOHNSTOWN — The Fredericktown Freddies came to “The Ridge” with one thing in mind: Getting one step closer to a Mid-Buckeye Conference title.
They got it, but they almost watched it slip away.
Clinging to a two-point lead as time ran out, Fredericktown’s Nash Cunningham fouled Chad Campbell — one of the Northridge Vikings’ (6-12, 3-8 MBC) best foul shooters — allowing him three shots with zero seconds left on the game clock.
All Cunningham and his Freddies teammates could do was watch, helplessly. Campbell’s first shot missed, and then the second shot hit the rim and bounced out. With a sigh of relief, the Freddies survived, 56-54.
“It was a crazy ending,” said Cunningham, who finished with 10 points but had missed a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left in the game. “Knowing I fouled the shooter was a terrible feeling. I was just hoping that we would have a shot at overtime.”
