BUTLER TOWNSHIP — The Backwoods Beagle Club didn’t attract as many entries as expected to its championship qualifier, but the 107 beagles entered found plenty of rabbits to run.
“There were a lot of rabbits and good running,” said Kevin Weaver of Fort Gay, W.Va., whose dog, X Daug Gus — co-owned by Paul Weaver — took top honors in the trial.
The top 10 finishers at the trial qualified to compete in the United Kennel Club World Beagle Championship in Michigan in October.
“We didn’t get the turnout we expected, due to bad weather up north and out in Missouri, but we’re still happy with the turnout,” said Backwoods Beagle Club President Brad Hanners.
Despite the weather, they still had entries from Indiana, West Virginia and Michigan, as well as Ohio.
“These guys put on a real hunt,” said Weaver, who said the four-hour drive to get there from his home isn’t unusual for him. “Next month, we’ll be going to Missouri for a trial.”
He and several friends and relatives made the trip with seven dogs. He didn’t say how many would be heading to Missouri.
