MOUNT VERNON — The Utica girls basketball team came into the Division II sectional tournament on a roll, having won eight games in a row.
Saturday, the roll continued.
The Redskins dominated from the opening tip and went on to post a 72-19 victory over visiting Highland in the Division II sectional tournament opener.
“In tournament time it’s always important to get off to a good start. We talked to the girls about playing good defense and getting off to a good start,” said Utica coach Terry Logue.
The Redskins (19-4) blitzed the Scots from the opening tip with their strong and quick defensive pressure. Highland (4-19) attempted just six shots in the first quarter, while turning the ball over 10 times. Eight of those turnovers were steals by the Redskins.
“Utica is a good team. Their guards are quick. They anticipate well, are quick to the basketball and never stop,” said Highland coach Galen Chapman. “We thought we’d try to slow things down and minimize the damage, but we’ve got to take care of the ball.”
