FREDERICKTOWN — It was the final home game of the season for the Fredericktown Freddies. For a while, it looked like the final game of the season, period.
The host Fredericktown Freddies climbed a difficult second rung on the ladder, defeating the Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs, 40-16, in Thursday’s OHSAA sectional final.
The Freddies did it despite the fact that the Bulldogs took two very important things from the Freddies for most of the first three quarters: Emily Williams and the basketball.
“They knew the impact that Emily has for us and they did a great job of, basically, triple-teaming her for a while,” said Fredericktown coach Wes Elifritz. ”We tried to mix up our offense in the second half to get her away from the basket and get some other girls some looks.”
Despite having a definite height advantage, the Freddies were nearly matched under the boards by the Bulldogs, who pulled down seven rebounds to the Freddies eight in the first half.
The Freddies had some early points from Williams, Courtney Jackson (six points) and Katie Ruhl (two points). They were not able, however, to capitalize off of three offensive rebounds and two of their five first-quarter steals. In the meantime, the Bulldogs offense denied the Freddies the ball, hanging on to it and wearing down the clock as well as the Freddies’ patience.
